Arthur Explains Aspergers
This clip from Arthur does a great job of explaining Aspergers to children. Aspergers now falls under the umbrella diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. One of the main differences between the previous diagnosis of autism disorder and Aspergers disorder is early language development. Children with Aspergers tend not to have language development delays. Yet can have challenges with inflections and using typical speech patters. Those with Aspergers tend to have average to above average IQs. “In 2013, the DSM-5 replaced Autistic Disorder, Asperger’s Disorder and other pervasive developmental disorders with the umbrella diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder.”*
Although, the term Aspergers is used in this video, it is still very helpful to explain autism because of the amount of similarities, like social challenges. Watching this as an adult it still offers such valuable information in such a simplistic way.
I’d like to do another post soon about sensory processing disorder which will help us better understand why things appear so loud to some, as displayed in this video. So look for that post soon. **UPDATE here is a link to a post on SPD**
