Carly Finds Words
This is an amazing video about Carly, she’s in her teens and for years had no words. Was labeled severely autistic and restarted. I found so much value in this video because it wasn’t just about autism to me. It was the power of words, and if we have them how do we use them? The value of never giving up on someone. And how often we don’t really know what someone is going through, wether they have the words or not. Carly didn’t have words until she got to a computer and even years later it took to so much work and times of struggling to get the words she had out on to the screen.
One of my big take aways from this video in regards to autism was how she explained why she bangs her head or hums or doesn’t give eye contact. It was so amazing to hear the defined by someone who is living it, not just guessing.
Again, I think there are so many take aways for parents to continue to love their child unconditionally and meet them where the are. This can be in a math assignment or learning to walk. I think most people would agree with that. But it can get hard. The phrase “the days are long, but the years are short” is something I try and tell my self often in regards to parenting. I know there are so many things I personally can do better in regards to parenting as a whole; not just with a child with autism. Taking time to step back and see the bigger picture.
I was so excited to see her growth and the how the parents are giving her the tools to succeed and the desire they have for her to be happy. I hope you find many take aways from this video as well.
